{37} Ruvigny Additions: Clarence Descents for Elizabeth Anne (née Glynn) Petre (1791-1828)

Henry William Petre of Dunkenhalgh Hall (1791-1852), the eldest surviving son of Hon. George William Petre & Maria Howard of Corby Castle, was married three times. His second wife, Adela Maria Howard, was his first cousin, and she and their three sons were covered in my previous post.
St Mary Catholic Church, Enfield, Clayton-le-Moors, Lancashire
Henry's third wife was the governess of his children, twenty years younger than him, and on a lower social level than him and his previous two wives. She was Martha Agatha Hofnell, born 11 February 1811 at Richmond, Surrey, daughter of John Hofnell of Richmond (an individual I can find next to nothing on, not even a will or death date). She married her employer Henry Petre on 5 November 1834 at St James Church, Altham, Lancashire, and seven years after his death married 2ndly, 1 October 1859 at St James Piccadilly, London, Arthur Houlton of Portman Square (c.1818-1878). Martha survived him as well, and died 8 March 1895 at Portman Square, London, buried 13 March 1895 at St Mary Catholic Chapel, Enfield, Clayton-le-Moors, Lancashire.

Henry's first wife, whom he married on 17 July 1818, was Elizabeth Anne Glynn, born 2 September 1791, and died 13 September 1828. She was the daughter of Edmund John Glynn of Glynn House, in the parish of Cardinham, Cornwall (born 22 June 1764 at Glynn House, christened 28 June 1764 at St Meubred Church, Cardinham; died 24 July 1840) and his wife (married 9 November 1790) Elizabeth Anne Worsley (born 1771; died June 1797).

Elizabeth's parents are found in Ruvigny's 1905 Clarence volume, in Table LXII on p. 52, tracing the descent of Elizabeth's mother Elizabeth Anne Worsley from Clarence's great-granddaughter Winifred Pole Barrington (see Line A below). Ruvigny indicates that Elizabeth Worsley and her husband Edmund John Glynn had issue, but did not trace it, so Elizabeth Glynn Petre and her descendants (of whom there are several living today) are not included.

Though Ruvigny did include the descent of Elizabeth's mother from George, Duke of Clarence, he overlooked the descent of her father Edmund John Glynn from Clarence. Both lines are given below, as are eight other lines of descent for Elizabeth Anne Glynn from Edward III, one of which (Line E) is an addition to Ruvigny's 1911 Mortimer-Percy volume.

Edward III had three sons A1, G1 & J1 (see below)

[*1] Ruvigny includes "Sir Edward Stafford of Chebsey = (1) Robsart Chapman" in Table LXVIII on p. 57 of his Clarence volume, and indicates that the couple had issue, but doesn't trace any of their descendants, so Generations B11 thru B17 above are all additions to Ruvigny. Per his HOP bio, Sir Edward Stafford had a son and two daughters by his first wife, and another son and daughter with his second wife Douglas (née Howard), Lady Sheffield.

C6) Lady Anne Plantagenet of York (1439-1476) m. 2) Sir Thomas St Leger (by 1438-1483), and had

[*2] Ruvigny, in his 1911 Mortimer-Percy volume, has a section for the descendants of Gertrude Dennys and her husband Nicholas Glynn, on p. 480. He indicates that they had issue, and refers the reader to "See Supplement". But I couldn't find the couple anywhere in his Supplement section, so Generations E14 thru E16 above appear to be additions to Ruvigny.

This wraps up my research on the Howards of Corby Castle and their spouses. For the next week or so, I'm going to focus on two articles I'm writing. Then after that, return to entering into my database the main branch of the Howard family, the Dukes of Norfolk. So hopefully there will be more blogposts here by mid-September.

Cheers,                                            ----Brad

{36} Some Edward III Descents for Hon. George William Petre (1766-1797)

Adela Maria (née Howard) Petre
[Portrait courtesy of Christopher Constable-Maxwell]
It's great to be blogging again after a pause of two months, longer than I had originally anticipated. Continuing with the intermarriages of the Corby Castle branch of the Howard family with the family of the Barons Petre of Writtle, both staunchly Catholic, we have the youngest daughter of Henry Howard of Corby Castle (1757-1842) & his 2nd wife Catherine Mary Neave (1770-1849):

ADELA MARIA HOWARD, b. Corby Castle, Wetheral, Cumberland, bap. 31 Mar. 1805 Holy Trinity Church, Wetheral; d. as a result of childbirth 9 Sept. 1833 Grosvenor Square, London, bur. St Mary Catholic Chapel, Enfield, Clayton-le-Moors, Lancashire; m. 20 Apr. 1830, as his second wife, her first cousin, HENRY WILLIAM PETRE of Dunkenhalgh Hall, b. 23 Apr. 1791 Marylebone, London; d. 26 Nov. 1852 Portman Square, Westminster, bur. St Mary Catholic Chapel, Enfield, son of Hon. George William Petre of Bellhouse (1766-1797, descended from Charles II - see A17 below) and Maria Howard (1762-1837, descended from Edward III), and had issue, three sons.

Issue of Henry William and Adela Maria (Howard) Petre:

1) EDWARD HENRY PETRE, of Whitley Abbey, Warwickshire, b. 21 Feb. 1831 Hanover Square, London; d. 21 Nov. 1902 Chelsea, London, bur. London Road Cemetery, Coventry, Warwickshire; m. 29 Oct. 1857 Rugby, Warwickshire, Lady GWENDOLINE ELIZABETH TALBOT (1836-1910), and had issue (covered by Ruvigny on p. 376 of his 1905 Clarence volume).

2) Lt. OSWALD PETRE, 6th Dragoon Guards, b. 15 Aug. 1832 London; d. unmarried 25 Nov. 1855 Dunkenhalgh Hall, bur. St Mary Catholic Chapel, Enfield.

3) HUBERT REGINALD PETRE, b. 3 Sept. 1833 Grosvenor Square; d. there nineteen days later 22 Sept. 1833, bur. St Mary Catholic Chapel, Enfield.

Dunkenhalgh Hall, in the parish of Clayton-le-Moors, Lancashire, was the seat of the Walmesley family for over a hundred years, since the 1580s, when it was acquired by the attorney and judge Sir Thomas Walmesley (c.1537-1612). The last male of the family, Francis Walmesley (1696-1711) died unmarried, a minor aged 14, and the manor was inherited by his only sister, the 13-year-old Catherine Walmesley, who was married the following year to the 22-year-old 7th Baron Petre. Widowed just a year later, Catherine married again, in 1733, to the 15th Baron Stourton, whom she also survived. After her death in 1785, per her own request, Dunkenhalgh Hall was inherited by Hon. George William Petre, the 9-year-old second son of her grandson the 9th Baron Petre.
Dunkenhalgh Hall is a 5-star hotel today
The young Hon. George Petre had also been designated to inherit the manor of Bellhouse, in the parish of Stanford Rivers, Essex, which had come back to the Baron Petre in 1762, at the failure of the male line of a younger branch of the family, which had been seated there since 1628. He held both manors at his early death in 1797 at age 31, leaving a widow, the former Maria Howard of Corby Castle (1762-1837), with their four surviving children, three sons and a daughter. The eldest son was Henry William Petre who made Dunkenhalgh Hall his chief seat, and who married as his second wife, his first cousin Adela Maria Howard, above.
9th Baron Petre - see Generation A16

{35} Ruvigny Addition: Exeter Descent for Daisy Ashford (1881-1972)

Daisy Ashford in 1919
Reportedly the inspiration for F. Scott Fitzgerald giving the first name 'Daisy' to the female lead of his novel The Great Gatsby, Daisy Ashford was a child prodigy at the tail end of the Victorian era, with a  bio in ODNB, Wikipedia, and a rather good online one, here. Born Margaret Mary Julia Ashford on 7 April 1881 at Elm Lodge, Petersham, Surrey, her family soon called her 'Daisy' after the string of daisies her elder half-brother placed on her at her christening. She wrote a novella The Young Visiters in 1890, when she was nine years old. After her mother's death in 1917, Daisy found the manuscript amongst her mother's papers, and it was published in 1919, with a preface by James M. Barrie.  Mixing sophistication with childlike innocence, rich descriptions with poor spelling and unintentional humour, the novella was an immediate success, reprinted eighteen times in the first year of publication, and made a mini-celebrity out of its author, now a middle-aged woman aged 38. Shy and unworldly, Daisy was overwhelmed by fame, and a few months later, on 9 January 1920, wedded a Norfolk farmer, James Patrick Devlin (1891-1956), ten years her junior, whom she had met while working at a Catholic soldiers' club in Bexhill, Sussex. Daisy never pursued writing as an adult, instead retreating into obscurity, a quiet marriage, and her family of two sons and two daughters. She spent her final years living with her daughter in the Norwich suburb of Hellesdon, where she died on 15 January 1972, at age 90.
Elm Lodge in Petersham, Surrey - Birthplace of Daisy Ashford
Through her ancestress Maria Howard of Corby Castle, Daisy Ashford has several lines of descent from Edward III, including a 15-generation one from Anne, Duchess of Exeter, sister of Edward IV and Richard III, as so.

Ruvigny has Maria Howard (Generation 18 above) on p. 559 of his Anne of Exeter volume:
"3e. Maria Howard, d. 11 June 1837; m. 1st, 6 Aug. 1786, the Hon. George William Petre, b. 10 Jan. 1766; d. 22 Oct. 1797; 2ndly (? as 2nd wife), 1802, Col. Henry Espinasse.
"See the Clarence Volume, pp. 376-377, Nos. 12944-12969."

But the Clarence Volume only covers Maria Howard's issue by her first husband. Through her second marriage, Maria had three children, and five grandchildren, only one of whom - William Henry Roxburgh Ashford (see Generation 20 above) - had issue of his own.
