{34} RD600 Additions: Agnes Maria (née von Rechberg) Risom & Jeff Risom

Ferdinand II, Holy Roman Emperor (1578-1637)
While entering into my database the German descendants of Katherine Mary Howard, wife of Count Ernst von Rechberg of Elkofen Castle, and daughter of the diplomat Sir Henry Francis Howard, scion of the Corby Castle branch of the family, I came across her granddaughter, another fascinating immigrant to the United States, who would make a nice addition to Gary Boyd Roberts's Royal Descents of 600 Immigrants series, especially as she descends from the 17th-century Hapsburg Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand II, in addition to the medieval Plantagenet kings of England.

Countess Agnes Frida Katharina Maria Gabriele Josepha von Rechberg was born 10 October 1921 at  Schräbsdorf Castle in Bobolice, Poland, the seat of her mother's family, the Counts Strachwitz von Gross-Zauche ind Camminetz. But she grew up in Bavaria, at Elkofen Castle, which her father Count Wolfgang von Rechberg had inherited from his childless elder brother in 1925. The von Rechberg family were devout Catholics and dismayed by the rise of Nazi Germany. At the end of World War II, Agnes went to work in Munich as a translator for the Arts and Monuments division of the U.S. Army, whose responsibility was to mitigate combat damage, primarily to structures—churches, museums, and other important monuments—as well as to locate movable works of art and other cultural items stolen or otherwise missing. Last year's movie  The Monuments Men by George Clooney, was based on the activities of this division.

While serving as a translator for this division, Agnes met and fell in love with Ole Christian Risom, who had served in the Army's ski patrol during the War, and was now a driver for the Monuments Men. Born in Copenhagen, the younger son of architect Sven Risom, Ole moved to Stockholm in the 1930s to learn the publishing business at Bonniers, the Swedish publisher. In 1940, he decided to immigrate to New York, where his elder brother Jens was beginning his career as a furniture designer (Jens Risom would go on to become one of the most influential designers of the mid-20th-century). He was granted permission to travel through occupied Denmark, where he saw his parents, and then went on to Lisbon to board a freighter. After being detained by the British in Trinidad for several weeks he finally reached New York. Ole joined the United States Army after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. In love with Agnes von Rechberg, Ole remained in Bavaria after his discharge from the U.S. Army, and the couple wed at Elkofen Castle in 1947. They returned to New York together soon after, first living in Manhattan, then eventually moving out to Long Island. Their three children were all born in the U.S. - Christopher Henry 'Chris' Risom in 1948, Camilla Elisabeth Risom in 1952, and Charles Nicholas 'Nick' Risom in 1962.

Any American who grew up in the 1950s, 60s and 70s is very familiar with the Little Golden Books series of children's books. Ole Risom was the creative force behind that series, serving as vice president and art director of that series from 1952 to 1972. Over the years, Ole was closely associated with Richard Scarry, the author and illustrator whose books have sold more than 100 million copies around the world. They worked together on dozens of books, including 'I Am a Bunny' in 1963,
Little Golden Books
which Ole wrote and Scarry illustrated. Ole also worked with other leading artists in the children's book field, including Dr. Seuss, Jim Henson and Sesame Street books, Stan and Jan Berenstain, Leo Lionni, Laurent de Brunhoff, Charles M. Schulz and Marc Brown. Agnes Risom became a U.S. citizen in 1950, and started up an independent bookstore in Locust Valley, Long Island, called Book Ends Cottage. The couple eventually settled in Roslyn Harbor, which is where they were living when Ole Risom died at age 80 in August 2000. Agnes survived as his widow for nine years, and died 19 May 2009 at Stamford, Connecticut, near the home of her youngest child Nick Risom.

All three of Ole and Agnes Risom's children have children of their own today, and the eldest grandchild, Jeffrey Lee 'Jeff' Risom is an architect with the acclaimed Danish firm Gehl Architects. He focuses on projects in San Francisco and New York, lectures worldwide, and lives with his wife and two young children in

Copenhagen, bringing the Risom family line full circle, back to its roots, and carrying Agnes von Rechberg Risom's descendants into the next generation.

The most recent monarch in Agnes Risom's ancestry is John III Sobieski, King of Poland (1629-1696), but as that monarch is not descended from Edward III, we'll start with the most recent one who is - Ferdinand II, Holy Roman Emperor. In the style of RD600, the line would appear as so:

1. Ferdinand II, Holy Roman Emperor = Maria Anna of Bavaria
2. Maria Anna of Austria = Maximilian I, Elector of Bavaria
3. Ferdinand Maria, Elector of Bavaria = Henriette Adelaide of Savoy
4. Maximilian II Emanuel, Elector of Bavaria = Teresa Sobieska of Poland
5. Duke Ferdinand Maria Innocenz of Bavaria = Maria Adelheid Fortunata Spaur-Flavon
6. Count Joseph Ferdinand von Salern (illegit.) = Maria Josepha Basselet de La Rosée
7. Countess Adelheid Maria Josepha von Salern = Karl Eligius von Strommer
8. Baroness Anna Maria von Strommer = Johann Adam von Aretin
9. Baron Peter Karl von Aretin = Franziska Antonia Maria Eva von Gumppenberg
10. Baroness Franziska Maria von Aretin = Maximilian Maria von Soden-Fraunhofen
11. Countess Frida Maria von Soden-Fraunhofen = Friedrich Strachwitz von Gross-Zauche und Camminetz
12. Countess Maria Franziska Strachwitz von Gross-Zauche und Camminetz = Wolfgang Franz von Rechberg
13. Countess Agnes Maria von Rechberg (1921-2009), immigrated to New York 1947 = Ole Christian Risom (1919-2000), children's book publisher[*]
14. Christopher Henry Risom (b. 1948) = Celeste S. Farhar
15. Jeffrey Lee Risom (b. 1978), architect, global lecturer

[*] Most online royal genealogy databases do not indicate any issue for Agnes von Rechberg and Ole Risom. Noble Circles by MacGregor Sadolin is the only one I've found that does. Noble Circles does not, however, include Martha Bush-Brown, the wife of Agnes and Ole's younger son Nicholas Risom. She is descended from the renowned Harvard University English literature professor George Lyman Kittredge (1860-1941).

My next post will look in more detail at the von Aretin family, and at Count Joseph Ferdinand von Salern, the illegitimate grandson of the Elector of Bavaria.

{33} Edward III Descents for Michael Henry Blount of Mapledurham House (1789-1874)

Michael Henry Blount (1789-1874)
heraldic achievement
Continuing with the ancestry of Agnes Mary Eyston, second wife of Maj. Charles M.T. Western, it is time to examine some Edward III lines behind her maternal grandfather Michael Henry Blount of Mapledurham House, Oxfordshire, who, in turn, was the son of Michael Blount and his second wife, Catherine, the only surviving child of John Petre of Bellhouse, in the parish of Stanford Rivers, Essex. For over a hundred and fifty years, since 1628, Bellhouse had been the seat of a younger branch of the Catholic baronial family, descended from the 2nd Baron Petre. "In the 17th century and the first half of the 18th Roman Catholic worship was carried on by the Petres at Bellhouse. This was one of the places served by the secret Jesuit mission in eastern England which was founded about 1633 and largely financed by the Petres. The first William Petre of Bellhouse was a servant of Charles I and in 1639 the king personally intervented to prevent him from being prosecuted for recusancy. There was probably a private chapel at Bellhouse, and Roman Catholic worship continued there until after the death of William Petre in 1745. The date when it finally ceased is not certain, but it is unlikely to have continued for long after the death of John Petre in 1762" [VCH Essex 4 (1956)].

John Petre left a will providing "that if he had no sons his estates should pass to Robert, Baron Petre (d. 1801), in trust for Lord Petre's second son, if one should be born to him. Provision was made for any daughters left." At his 1762 death, John's only child, the two-year-old Catherine, became entitled  to a jointure of £4,000 from his estate, while the manor and chief seat of Bellhouse passed to Lord Petre, as per John's will. John's widow oversaw her daughter Catherine's first marriage, at the age of seventeen, to the 26-year-old scion of an established Catholic family of London goldsmiths and bankers, Francis Wright of Bedford Square. Wright died eight years after the marriage, leaving Catherine a wealthy, childless (their only son died twelve days after his birth) widow in her mid-20s. A year later, she married another Catholic gentleman, Michael Blount, twenty-three years her senior, whose first wife had died a mere five months after the birth of their only child, a daughter who was now five years old. Blount and Catherine would have four children together: two daughters, a younger son, and a son and heir.

This concludes my series of posts exploring the ancestry of Col. Charles Maximilian Thomas Western (1855-1913) and his two wives.

Over the next couple weeks, I'll be focusing on entering into my database the German noble families who married the Howard of Corby Castle ladies, and their descendants. I have one family (von Recum) completed, with two more remaining. There are, to my surprise, some Edward III lines among them, so look for posts on those soon.

{32} Edward III Descents for Charles Eyston of Hendred House (1790-1857)

Eyston of Hendred coat of arms
[Sable, three lions rampant, or]
Having in the previous blogpost examined the ancestry of Maria Teresa (née Metcalfe) Eyston, the focus now is on the ancestry of her husband. The Eystons inherited, in the mid-15th century, Hendred House, which historically lay within the county of Berkshire, but a boundary change in the 20th century has it today within Oxfordshire. John Eyston of Hendred House (c.1504-1545) was the first to marry into the Edward I bloodline when he took to wife, about 1530, Maud, the youngest daughter of Humphrey Tyrell of Little Warley Hall in Essex. Their grandson William Eyston (d. 1649), and great-grandson William Eyston (1611-1670) also married ladies descended from Edward I. The most recent pedigree of the family is the Eyston of East Hendred article in Burke's Landed Gentry 18th edition Volume 1 (1965), pp. 250-251, but by far the most thorough is Pedigree of the Family of Eyston of East Hendred privately printed in 1875.

{31} Edward III/Thomas More/Thomas Cromwell Descents for Maria Teresa (née Metcalfe) Eyston (1791-1848)

Sir Thomas More
The recent television mini-series Wolf Hall, based on the best-selling novel by Hilary Mantel, had me deceived by it's title. Not having read the book, I assumed it would be a look at Henry VIII's reign through the view of the Seymours, since Wolf Hall was their family seat. Instead, it was a contemplative (and at times painfully slow-moving) account of the reign through Thomas Cromwell's point of view. Mark Rylance gave a brilliant, multi-dimensional performance as Cromwell, and Sir Thomas More (played by Anton Lesser) was portrayed as a shrill, arrogant fanatic. This is the complete opposite of the Oscar-winning film adaptation of Robert Bolt's 1960s play A Man For All Seasons, where Paul Scofield plays More as a dignified figure, the most principled man in the room, with Leo McKern's Cromwell a materialistic, hypocritical villain. The television series The Tudors, which I'm very fond of, has what I feel is the most accurate portrayal of the two, with neither More nor Cromwell an all-out hero or an all-out villain.
Thomas Cromwell

The two men have come to symbolize the different religious factions, Catholic and Protestant, that arose when Henry VIII split the Anglican Church off from Rome. Whether or not this is how they were perceived in their own time is for historians to research, but it's certainly how they are being portrayed onscreen today. It's therefore interesting from a genealogical perspective to come across an individual who can claim descent from both men. Agnes Mary (née Eyston) Western is one, with her paternal grandmother Maria Teresa (née Metcalfe) Eyston the gateway link to these two divergent lines.

In 1838, Maria Teresa Eyston succeeded her childless brother as the senior representative (the one amongst an individual's living descendants who would theoretically be entitled to an estate, or any other claim, from that individual based on primogeniture - i.e. the eldest son of the eldest son of the eldest son, or, if there are no sons, the eldest daughter, etc), of Sir Thomas More. This came to her through her paternal grandmother Bridget More of Barnburgh Hall, the Yorkshire seat of the More family since the 16th century.
Barnburgh Hall, Yorkshire. It was demolished in 1969.
Through her mother Maria Teresa is a 12-generation descendant of George Plantagenet, Duke of Clarence, and appears on p. 383 of Ruvigny's Clarence volume (1905). As the ancestry of Maria Teresa's maternal grandfather Sir George Throckmorton, Heir of Coughton Court, is well-covered in Ruvigny and other sources, I won't repeat his Edward III lines here, and only the Edward III lines for Maria Teresa's maternal grandmother Dame Anna Maria (née Paston) Throckmorton appear below, one of which (Line D) is through Thomas, Lord Cromwell's granddaughter Frances Strode.

[*1] Kathy Lynn Emerson on her website A Who's Who of Tudor Women makes it clear that the Elizabeth Darcy who married and divorced Sir John Leigh of Stockwell was not the same woman as the Elizabeth Darcy who married Humphrey Colles of Barton Grange (see C8 below). However, if Elizabeth Darcy divorced Humphrey Colles by 1544 when he married his second wife, rather than died, the chronology could work for her to have been the same woman. I've made two different Elizabeth Darcys in my database, but further research is needed.

Lawson coat of arms
[*2] Mary Lawson, who died 23 September 1679 at Bath, is a granddaughter of Roger Lawson of Heton Hall (1571-1614) & Dorothy Constable (1580-1632), both descendants of Edward III. Mary Lawson appears on p. 299 of Ruvigny's 1911 Mortimer-Percy volume, married to "(---) Paston of co. Norfolk". Ruvigny was unaware of any issue of the couple, so generations B13 & B14 above are additions to Ruvigny. The best account of this branch of the Paston family is the article 'The Pastons of Horton' by J.N. Langston, in Transactions of the Bristol and Gloucestershire Archaeological Society Volume 77 (1958). Neither Ruvigny, in his Table XVIII, nor Rev. John William Clay in his Lawson of Brough pedigree in Dugdale's Visitation of Yorkshire, with Additions Volume 2 (1907), have any details on Mary's father James Lawson beyond the fact that he "resided at Scremerston, co. Durham" [sic - Scremerston is in Northumberland, not county Durham], and his wife (Mary's mother) is unidentified.  The Northumberland County History Committee's History of Northumberland series has a pedigree on pp. 392-395 of Volume 13 (1930), which is cited as a source in the ODNB bio of James's mother Dorothy Constable Lawson. It may provide more information on James Lawson of Scremerston, but I'm unable to access that volume here in Vancouver.

{30} Edward IV Descents for Agnes Mary (née Eyston) Western (1870-1961)

Agnes Mary (née Blount) Eyston (1834-1918)
as a young girl at Mapledurham House
Through her ancestor Charles II, Agnes Mary Eyston, the second wife of Col.. Charles M.T. Western, has two lines of descent from Edward IV through his eldest legitimate child Elizabeth of York, queen of Henry VII. In addition, through her father, Agnes has a definite descent from Edward IV's illegitimate son Arthur Plantagent, Viscount Lisle, and through her mother she has a probable descent from Edward IV's illegitimate daughter Dame Margaret Lumley.

Ogle coat of arms
[*1] Most online databases, including Roglo and Genealogics, make 'Anne' Ogle, the wife of Sir John Delaval, a daughter of Ralph, 3rd Baron Ogle (1468-1513) and Margaret Gascoigne. The genealogist W. Percy Hedley in his Northumberland Families, in both his Ogle and Lisle articles, says that Anne, daughter of the 3rd Baron Ogle, married first Humphrey Lisle of Felton, who died before 1542, then married Sir John Delaval (d. 1572). Hedley in his Ogle article (p. 149): "The 1563/4 visitation pedigree only credits Ralph, [3rd] lord Ogle, with one child, a son Robert, but the 1575 pedigree gives him two other sons William and John, and three daughters...Anne wife of Humfrey, son and heir to sir William Lisle" later on p. 151, Hedley says, "The early visitation pedigrees of the Ogle family are very inconsistent about the sons of the 4th baron and his wife Anne Lumley. The pedigree of 1563/4 has internal evidence that it was very out of date at the time of this visitation...The 1575 pedigree, on the other hand, is completely up to date...This pedigree can therefore be taken as reasonably accurate in respect of the children of the 4th lord. These are given as" four sons Ralph (died young), Robert the 5th Lord, Thomas (died young), Owen (4th son) and one daughter "Agnes".
Ogle pedigree from 1575 Visitation of the North
[As published by the Surtees Society]

The Ogle pedigree from the 1575 Visitation is on p. 88-89 of Visitation of the North Part IV. It does give a daughter to the 3rd Baron "Anne maried to Humfrey son and heir to Sir William Lisle", and a daughter to the 4th Baron "Agnes", with no marriage. No mention of any marriage to a Sir John Delaval. Hedley in his Lisle article (p. 226) says that Sir William Lisle and his son Humphrey participated in several raids in 1527, freeing prisoners from the gaol at Newcastle, stealing cattle from the sheriff of Northumberland, etc. This led to Sir William's execution in April 1528, when "Humphrey and apparently his younger brother were pardoned on account of their youth". Hedley assumed Humphrey Lisle was only about thirteen years old in 1521 when the canons of Bridlington "asserted themselves and occupied the tithe corn and when sir William heard of this 'he sent his son and servant (called Jowsey) to turn them out; on which they killed him (the canon) with their swords'". No father would send a 13-year-old son to deal with a hot button issue like that. Maybe an 18-year-old son. This evidence suggests that Humphrey was born no later than 1503.

Delaval of Seaton coat of arms
Hedley's Delaval article is basically taken word-for-word from the 1909 Delaval pedigree in History of Northumberland Volume 9. There, Sir John Delaval "was 40 years of age at his father's death" (so born by 1523). He couldn't have been born much before that date as his father was "born 16 April 1498". Sir John's wife is "Anne, or Agnes, widow of Sir Humphrey Lisle, and dau. of Ralph, Lord Ogle", and cites "Flower's Visitation of Yorkshire, 1563/4" as it's source. The original pedigrees taken by the herald William Flower in 1563/4 and 1567 were published in Visitations of the North Part II. There is neither a Delaval nor an Ogle pedigree. So actually what HoN used in 1909 was the Harleain Society's Delaval pedigree from it's 1881 Visitation of Yorkshire, where "John Delavale Esquyer = Agnes doter of the Lord Ogle".

Given that: a) the latest that Anne Ogle, daughter of the 3rd Baron Ogle, could have been born is 1513 (the year he died); b) all chronological evidence points to the children of the 3rd Lord Ogle born earlier than that, in the timespan of 1490 to 1505; c) Humphrey Lisle of Felton appears to have been born no later than 1503; d) Sir John Delaval appears to have been born a full generation later, in the early 1520s; e) so far there isn't a 16th-century original document that confirms Lisle and Delaval were married to the same lady; and f) the (presumably 16th-century) source of the 1881 Harleain Society Delaval pedigree states that Sir John Delaval's wife's first name not 'Anne' but 'Agnes', and we know that the 4th Lord Ogle had a daughter by that name who works perfectly chronologically - I'm going on the assumption in my database that the 3rd Lord Ogle had a daughter Anne married to Humphrey Lisle of Felton (c.1503-bef.1542), and the 4th Lord Ogle's daughter Agnes was the one who was married to Sir John Delaval (by 1523-1572).

[*2] The most recent pedigree of the Blounts of Mapledurham can be found in BLG 17th Edition (1952), p. 2158, sub Riddell of Cheeseburn Grange. It states that William Blount of Kidmore End (d. 1676) married "Elizabeth, dau. of Sir Ralph Delaval, Bt., of Seaton Delaval, Northumberland". Sir Ralph Delaval, 1st Baronet was born 13 October 1622, and Lyster Blount, the son of William Blount & Elizabeth Delaval, was born in 1654. It's chronologically impossible for a man born in 1654 to have been the grandson of one born in 1622. So William Blount's wife Elizabeth cannot have been the daughter of the first, or any subsequent, Delaval baronet.

Seaton Delaval Hall, Northumberland
The 1909 Delaval pedigree in HoN (followed by Hedley) doesn't show any Delaval daughter married to a William, or any, Blount. The 1979 book Village Education in Nineteenth-Century Oxfordshire by Pamela Horn (available on snippet view thru Google Books) states on p. 52, that William Blount's wife Elizabeth "was daughter of Sir Ralph Delaval of Seaton Delaval, Northumberland", and that Elizabeth Delaval Blount was living in 1685, a widow and a Papist.

Going back to the 1909 Delaval pedigree, Sir Ralph Delaval (by 1577-1628), the grandfather of the 1st Baronet, did have a daughter Elizabeth, born in 1615, but per the pedigree, she died unmarried in 1629, a month before her 14th birthday. Looking closely at the pedigree, the likeliest Elizabeth Delaval to have been the wife of William Blount, is Sir Ralph Delaval's niece Elizabeth, "baptized 11th August, 1623; living unmarried, 2nd August, 1650", a daughter of his younger brother Robert Delaval of Cowpen. This works well chronologically, as William Blount could not have been born prior to 1620 (his father's first wife died in November 1619), and Lyster Blount, the couple's elder son, was born in 1654, just four years after Elizabeth Delaval was reported living unmarried. This is how I have it in my database, with a note that further research is needed.

Luckily, my conjectural Line B above is the trickiest of Agnes Mary Eyston Western's ancestral lines. My next post will look in detail at the Edward III lines for Maria Teresa Metcalfe (see A11 above), who is a descendant of St Thomas More through her father, and of his adversary Thomas, Lord Cromwell, through her mother.
