The previous post gave a descent from Edward III for Ellen Thresher, second wife of Sir Bourchier Wrey, 6th Baronet, that was an addition to Ruvigny's 1907 Anne of Exeter volume. This post will present five additional descents from Edward III for Ellen, Lady Wrey. [Update: many thanks to John Higgins, for sending me the two further lines of descent (Lines D and E below) from Edward III for Lady Ellen Wrey.]

Edward Thresher was a successful clothier in Bradford-on-Avon, Wiltshire, who married Dyonisia, daughter of Richard Long of Collingbourne Kingston, from one of the most prominent gentry families in the county. Their only surviving son John Thresher, a respected attorney, returned to Bradford-on-Avon at his father's death. Since 1698, the Thresher home in the town was the Chantry House. John waited until middle age to marry, taking to wife Ellen Long, the only daughter of his first cousin Henry Long of Melksham House.

The Longs of South Wraxall Manor had become one of the leading families in Wiltshire by the mid-15th-century, in large part due to the patronage of the Lords Hungerford, to whom they were related. Sir Thomas Long (d. 1508) was connected both with the Barons Stourton and with the Seymours of Wolf Hall, and acquired the manor of Draycot Cerne in the county, making Draycot House there the family's chief seat. It was his son Sir Henry Long who first married into the Edward I bloodline, taking to wife, at some point between 1510 and 1515, Eleanor (née Wrottesley) Leversedge, the twenty-something widow of the squire of Vallis House in the parish of Frome, Wiltshire, about 13 miles from South Wraxall. But long before this marriage, probably in the 14th-century, a branch of the Longs had separated from the main South Wraxall line. In the mid-17th century, the head of this junior line was Thomas Long of Little Cheverell and Melksham House (1579-1654), whose eldest son John Long inherited those properties, but died childless, when his nephew Henry Long (1659-1686), eldest son of his next brother Richard Long of Collingbourne Kingston (c.1633-1669), inherited. It was this Henry Long who married back into the senior branch of the family, taking to wife Anne, the youngest sister of Hope Long of South Wraxall Manor (1648-1715). Henry Long of Melksham House died at the young age of 28, and his only son was born posthumously seven months after his death.

[*1] I cannot locate baptism or burial entries for Mary Thresher in the three major online genealogy databases (Ancestry, Find My Past, Family Search), which is odd, since I can find them for each of her three sisters. Mary's date of death is from her M.I. in Melksham Church, which also states she died at age 77. Her P.C.C. will dated 8 July 1814, proved 21 January 1817, leaves bequests to all six grown children of her sister Ellen, Lady Wrey, as well as to several of their children. The affidavit to the will, made on 9 Dec. 1816 and sworn on 10 Jan. 1817, confirms Mary's death date of 12 Dec. 1816, as it appears on her M.I.

[*2] I'm one of those who feel there is not enough evidence to support Joan Stradling, the first wife of Maurice Dennys of Siston, being a daughter of Jane Beaufort, daughter of Cardinal Henry Beaufort. But for those who feel that connection is valid, then Barbara Carne, wife of Sir Robert Long, would be a descendant of Edward III thru Cardinal Beaufort.
South Wraxall Manor, Wiltshire
[*3] Per her marriage licence, Anne Long was age 26, so born in 1658, and per her M.I. in South Wraxall Church, she was age 48 at death, so born in 1656/7. Both ages are incorrect, making her younger than she actually was. In the PCC will of her father John Long, dated 19 Feb. 1651/2, and proved 12 July 1652, he leaves property "for and towards the diet education & mainteynance of all my children That is to say Elizabeth Long, Katharine Long, Hope Long, Love Longe, and the child or children which my said wife goeth with or is lately brought to bed of." Anne was thus her father's youngest child, born in 1652. I am grateful to Chris Pitt-Lewis for bringing this to my attention in a Feb. 2014 SGM post. In addition to her son (A14 above), Anne Long had one other child, a namesake daughter, Anne Long, bap. 6 Oct. 1685 St James Church, South Wraxall; bur. 27 June 1749 St Mary Church, Whaddon, Wiltshire, wife of Rev. Walter Clarke, rector of Whaddon, bur. there 16 Mar. 1735.

[*5] Elizabeth (Long) Long m. 2nd 29 Sept. 1670 St Mary Church, Collingbourne Kingston, John Ayres, esquire, and, aside from a mention of "Elizabeth Eyres" by her brother Henry Long of Rood Ashton House (1632-1672) when he made out his will the following year, I've been unable to uncover her subsequent history, or when she died. Nor have I been able to further identify her second husband. [Update 31 July 2017: Thanks to Cheryl Nicol and her detailed genealogical work Inheriting the Earth: The Long Family's 500 Year Reign in Wiltshire (which I highly recommend), Elizabeth's second husband can be further identified. He was John Eyre of Little Chalfield, Wiltshire, bur. 26 Aug. 1672 All Saints Church, Great Chalfield, est son of Robert Eyre of Little Chalfield (1591-1651) and his 1st wife Elizabeth Warne (d. 1632). By John Eyre, Elizabeth (née Long) had further issue, two daughters. Her date of death remains elusive.]

The next blogpost will continue the ancestry of Hon. Annette (née Palk) Baird, and explore a line of descent from Edward III for Lady Dorothy Elizabeth (née Vaughan) Palk that is an addition to Ruvigny's 1911 Mortimer-Percy volume.

{85} Ruvigny Addition: Exeter Descent for Ellen (née Thresher), Lady Wrey (1733-1813)

Ellen (née Thresher), Lady Wrey (1733-1813)
Continuing with the royal ancestry of Hon. Annette (née Palk) Baird, mother of Muriel Jane (née Baird) Noel, we have Ellen Thresher, the second wife of Sir Bourchier Wrey, 6th Baronet. The couple are found in Table V (p. 8) of Ruvigny's 1907 Anne of Exeter volume, with their descendants (or at least those known to the marquis) enumerated on pp. 128-136. Ruvigny, however, was unaware that Ellen, Lady Wrey, was, like her husband, also a descendant of Anne, Duchess of Exeter, sister of Edward IV and Richard III. Her ancestress Anne (née Strangways) appears in Table LXIX (pp. 74-75) of the Exeter volume, with her husband George Norton of Abbots Leigh, and a question as to whether or not the couple had issue. They did indeed have one surviving daughter, Grace Norton, the first wife of Arthur Norton, eldest son of Bonham Norton (1565-1635), a London printer and bookseller, who was the official printer to King James I, and in that capacity was one of the original publishers of the King James version of the Holy Bible. Arthur Norton continued his father's printing business for a short while only, for he died in October 1635, six months after his father., leaving two sons, George and Hugh Norton, by his first wife Grace (née Norton).

The Norton publishing dynasty of London were of Shropshire origin, seated at Church Stretton in that county, and were unrelated (as far as can be determined) to the Nortons seated at Leigh Court, in the Somersetshire parish of Abbots Leigh. The identical surnames seem to have confused subsequent heralds and genealogists, including Peter Le Neve (1661-1729), Norroy King of Arms, whose 1696 pedigree of Sir George Norton of Abbots Leigh (1622-1668), has that knight as the son, rather than the grandson, of George and Anne (née Strangways) Norton. Starting with this Sir George, the 17th-century Nortons of Abbots Leigh bore the Norton of London & Stretton coat of arms, which had been issued to Bonham Norton in 1611, quartered with the arms of the 16th-century Nortons of Abbots Leigh.

Ellen, Lady Wrey, did not leave much of a mark on history, though she survived to the age of 80, dying in 1813 in Regency-era Bath, and two of her daughters were acquaintances of novelist Jane Austen. The inscription on the monument she shares with her husband in St Peter Church, Tawstock, Devon, gives a glimpse into her character: "affectionately regretted by her surviving family, and closing on the 2d of December 1813, a Life of habitual piety, active Benevolence & every christian Virtue."

Peter Le Neve's 1696 pedigree of Norton of Abbots Leigh,
published in 1873 by the Harleian Society

[*1] Anne (née Strangways) Norton was mentioned in the 25 Oct. 1635 will of her son-in-law Arthur Norton "I wille unto my lovinge Mother Mrs. Anne Norton," and she was one of the three individuals who proved the will on 15 Nov. 1635. The fact that no mention is made of his father-in-law George Norton, Anne's husband, suggests that he had predeceased Arthur.

[*2] Arthur Norton m. 2nd 6 June 1627 St Mary Aldermanbury, London, Rebecca, widow of David Briggs of London, merchant. She m. 3rd Nicholas Francklin of Lincolns Inn, and was living 1642.

{84} Edward III Descents for siblings John Rolle (c.1649-1689) and Florence (née Rolle), Lady Wrey (1657-1724)

When John Rolle, the heir to one of the largest landed families in the West Country (holding over forty manors in Devon alone), married Lady Christiana Bruce, daughter of the earl of Ailesbury, in 1677, it was the most prestigious match yet made by a Rolle. The family fortune was founded by John's great-great-grandfather George Rolle (by 1486-1552), who was likely of Dorset origin, but made his career in London, where he owned and leased property. A successful attorney, he had a clientele which included several monastic houses in Devon, and one of that county's leading peers, Arthur Plantagenet, Viscount Lisle, great-uncle to King Henry VIII. As Lisle's legal counsel, Rolle was prominent in the viscount's protracted dispute with Henry Daubeney during the 1530s over Lady Lisle's property. And it was in Devon where George Rolle built his own country house, at the manor of Stevenstone, in the parish of St Giles Wood, near Torrington, which he purchased in 1524.

George's great-grandson Sir Henry Rolle, the heir to Stevenstone House, was the first of the family to marry into the Edward I bloodline. His wife was Anne, the elder daughter and co-heir of Sir Thomas Denys of Holcombe Burnell in Devon. Among the several properties she brought with her to the Rolles was Bicton House, which became a favourite residence of the family. Sir Henry Rolle died in 1616, nine years before his father, who died at the age of 80 in 1625. The heir was Sir Henry's only surviving son, Dennis Rolle, then aged eleven-and-a-half. Dennis went on to become the youngest sheriff of Devon before his own untimely death at age 23 in 1638. He had married young, at age 15, and had fathered six children, but only one had been a son, which had died an infant in December 1636. Dennis's five daughters stood to inherit Bicton House and the other properties that had come to the Rolles through their grandmother Anne (née Denys), but the chief seat of Stevenstone House and most of the other Rolle properties were entailed, so they passed to Dennis's only surviving male first cousin. And when he died in 1647, with no son, they then passed to a 21-year-old distant cousin, John Rolle, a farmer at Marhayes, in the parish of Week St Mary, Cornwall, who was mowing hay when news was brought to him that he had inherited Stevenstone House. By that point, Florence, the eldest of Dennis Rolle's four surviving daughters, was aged 16, and John Rolle wisely married her, reuniting Bicton House and the other properties from the Denys inheritance, with Stevenstone House and the Rolle inheritance. John Rolle, the couple's eldest son and heir, was the one who made the prestigious marriage to Lady Christiana Bruce. The male line of George Rolle (by 1486-1552) went extinct in 1842 at the death of John and Lady Christiana Rolle's great-grandson John, who was elevated to the peerage as Baron Rolle of Stevenstone in 1796.
Stevenstone House, Devon
Of Sir John and Florence Rolle's five younger children, the only one to have issue was their younger daughter Florence, who married the 28-year-old Sir Bourchier Wrey, a baronet from Cornwall who had inherited through his mother the Devon estates of the Bourchier earls of Bath, chief of which was Tawstock House in Devon, just 8 miles from Stevenstone House.

JOHN ROLLE, Heir of Stevenstone House, St Giles in the Wood, Devon, b. c.1649 (aged 28 in 1677); bur. 22 Apr. 1689 St Mary Church, Bicton, Devon, son of Sir John Rolle of Stevenstone House (1626-1706) and Florence Rolle (1631-1705, descended from Edward III - see Generation A12 below); m. 9 June 1677 St Andrew Church, Ampthill, Bedfordshire, as her 1st husband, Lady CHRISTIANA BRUCE, b. c.1658 (age "about 19" in 1677)[*1]; d. 5 Apr. 1720, bur. 23 Apr. 1720 St Mary Church, Bicton, Devon, 4th surv. dau. of Robert Bruce, 1st Earl of Ailesbury (1626-1685, descended from Edward III) and Lady Diana Grey (c.1629-1689, descended from Edward III), and had issue, three sons and three daughters.

6) CHRISTIANA ROLLE, bap. 1 Jan. 1689 St Giles Church, St Giles in the Wood; d. young or unm.
Lady Christiana (née Bruce) Rolle
(c.1658-1720)

[*1] From at least 1756, in the 3rd edition of The Peerage of England by Arthur Collins, Lady Christiana is listed as the third daughter of Robert Bruce, 1st Earl of Ailesbury, immediately after Lady Anne Bruce who married Sir William Rich, 2nd Baronet of Sunning, and immediately before Lady Mary Bruce, who married Sir William Walter, 2nd Baronet of Sarsden. Lady Christiana was indeed the third of Lord Ailesbury's daughters to marry. But we know from Lady Mary's baptism entry in the parish register of St James Church, Clerkenwell, that she was born on the last day of 1657. We also know that Thomas Bruce, the second earl of Ailesbury, was born the previous year, in September 1656. From her marriage licence, Lady Christiana was "about 19" in June 1677, so born about 1658-59. No baptism entry for her has been uncovered, but it seems she was actually a year or so younger than her sister Lady Mary, and so was the fourth, not the third, surviving daughter of the first earl of Ailesbury.

[*2] Lt-Col. John Lambrick Vivian, the Victorian-era genealogist who specialized in West Country families, has a pedigree of Rolle of Stevenstone in his 1897 Visitations of the County of Devon. He has Col. Dennis Rolle, a younger son of Sir John Rolle, K.B., as the Dennis Rolle who died at Horwood, Devon in 1714. It's clear from Dennis Rolle's M.I. in Horwood Church--"Here lyeth the body of Dennis Rolle, esq. of Horwood, the son of Jno Rolle, esq. the grand son of Sir Jno Rolle of Stevenstone, Knight of the Bth, who died ye 20th of September 1714"--that Vivian was incorrect, and that Dennis Rolle of Horwood was the younger son of John and Lady Christiana (Bruce) Rolle, and the grandson of Sir John Rolle, K.B. William Cooke, a genealogist in Ontario, Canada, has an online account of the Descendants of Sir John Rolle (1627-1706), and correctly has Dennis Rolle of Horwood as the youngest son of John and Lady Christiana Rolle. He has this Dennis Rolle's wife as Susan, daughter of Richard Lant. Susan, daughter of Richard Lant of London m. 1st, Sir Peter Lear, 1st Baronet of London (d. 1683), and m. 2nd, Dennis Rolle. But a lady married to a man who died in 1683 had to have been born in the 1660s, at the latest, and so it is chronologically impossible for her to have been the wife of a man born in 1682, and mother of his daughter born in 1708. It would appear that the second husband of Susan (Lant) Lear was instead Col. Dennis Rolle of Great Torrington, Devon, the younger son of Sir John Rolle, K.B., and uncle of Dennis Rolle of Horwood. Col. Dennis Rolle was buried 9 Feb. 1713 at St Giles Church, St Giles in the Wood. Per the baptism entry for Anne Rolle in the Horwood Parish Register, she was daughter of Dennis and Anne (not Susan) Rolle. Dennis Rolle married Anne Herbert in 1707 in London, per Boyd's marriage indexes, 1538-1850, and this fits perfectly with the baptism of Anne Rolle the following year.
St Michael Church, Horwood, Devon
[*3] Many genealogists, including Lt-Col. Vivian, and George Edward Cokayne in his Complete Baronetage, assume that Diana Rolle, wife of Sir Bourchier Wrey, 5th Baronet, was baptized at St Giles in the Wood on 12 July 1683. But it's clear from a M.I. in that church that the Diana Rolle baptized in July 1683 died an infant two months later in September 1683. No baptism entry for Diana (Rolle), Lady Wrey, has surfaced. Nor has a burial entry for Diana, Lady Wrey, been uncovered. There is no M.I. for her in St Peter Church, Tawstock, the burial place of the Wrey baronets, which is odd. The will of Diana Wrey of Tawstock, Devon, was proved in 1721, per the Devon Wills Index, 1163-1999. This would appear to be for Diana (née Rolle), Lady Wrey, except that baptism entries for children of the couple exist for Charles Wrey (15 June 1722 Tawstock), Anna Christiana Wrey (28 June 1723 Tawstock), and Catherine Wrey (4 July 1725 Barnstaple). So 1721 for the date Diana Wrey's will was proved must be a mistranscription?

{83} Ruvigny Addition: Clarence Descent for Hon. Annette (née Palk) Baird (1851-1884)

Lady Christiana (née Bruce) Rolle (c.1658-1820)
Continuing with the royal lines of descent in the ancestry of Annette (née Palk) Baird, the mother of Muriel Jane Baird, wife of Byron Viner Noel, we have one that is an addition to Ruvigny's 1905 Clarence volume.  On the last of his tables in that volume - Table LXXX on p. 70 - Ruvigny has "Lady Christian Bruce" with two husbands and a question as to whether or not she left issue. As it turns out, she left issue from both of her marriages. The descendants of her second marriage went extinct in 1781, but there are many descendants from Lady Christiana's first marriage living today. Indeed, in the subsequent volume of Ruvigny's series, the Anne of Exeter one published two years later in 1907, Ruvigny shows the wife of Sir Bourchier Wrey, 5th Baronet as "Diana Sparke née Rolle," unaware that Diana was the daughter of Lady Christiana Bruce. So all of Diana's descendants who appear in Sections 57 thru 62 (pp. 128-136) of the Exeter volume, by right should be in the previous Clarence volume.
From Ruvigny's 1905 Clarence volume

Not much is known today of Lady Christiana (Bruce) (Rolle) Gayer, beyond her stunning portrait by Peter Lely. Art historians believe it was painted in 1677, on the occasion of her first marriage to John Rolle. Per their marriage licence, Lady Christiana was then age 19 and her husband age 28, so nine years her senior. Rolle, even though both of his parents were living, was old enough to choose his own bride, and as her portrait indicates, Lady Christiana was a great beauty. She was the fourth surviving daughter of the earl of Ailesbury, one of the most active peers in the House of Lords and one of the most trusted by King Charles II. The 1677 licence states that Ailesbury gave his consent to his daughter's marriage. He had arranged for his two eldest daughters to marry young baronets, and after the eldest one was widowed about the age of twenty, he arranged her subsequent marriage to the heir to the earldom of Rutland.
From Ruvigny's 1907 Exeter volume
Lord Ailesbury could have anticipated a grand match into the peerage for his next marriageable daughters Lady Mary and Lady Christiana, who were only a year apart. John Rolle had no title, nor the prospect of one, when he asked the earl for his daughter's hand. Nevertheless, the prospective groom came from a strong Royalist family and his father, Sir John Rolle senior, was moderately active in the Cavalier Parliament which had started in 1661 and would continue on until 1679. Even better, the Rolles were considered the wealthiest family in the West Country, holding over forty manors in Devon alone, and an annual income of about £6,000. Lord Ailesbury could be assured that his daughter would never want for anything.

Lady Christiana's first husband emerges even less clearly today that she does. Constantly in the shadow of his father, a Knight of the Bath, the younger John Rolle ran for his own seat in Parliament, at Barnstaple in 1685, but was defeated by two Tories. He died four years later, at the premature age of forty, with a 62-year-old father who would survive for another seventeen years, and a 30-year-old widow with several young children (three sons and a daughter survived infancy). With both her parents now dead and her brother the 2nd earl of Ailesbury in exile with the deposed King James II, Lady Christiana could no longer count on the head of the Bruce family as a powerful figure at court. If she wanted any kind of life independent of her wealthy in-laws in Devon, she only had her sisters and their husbands to turn to for advice and support. It is from the family circle of her sister Lady Anne Rich that Lady Christiana found her second husband.

Sir Robert Gayer was in his late 50s in 1690, a widower with five children, ranging in age from 24 to 11. His first wife had died in 1683, and her brother, Sir William Rich, 2nd Baronet of Sonning (c.1654-1711), was married to Lady Anne (née Bruce), the elder sister of Lady Christiana Rolle. He had a townhouse on Jermyn Street in Westminster, and a country seat in Stoke Poges, Buckinghamshire, which he had spent the past decade re-modelling and updating. Gayer was descended from the younger son of a minor gentry family from Liskeard in Cornwall, but it was trade that made the family's fortune. His father Sir John Gayer (1584-1649) had been a merchant and member of both the Worshipful Company of Fishmongers and the East India Company, who served terms as Sheriff and as Lord Mayor of London, and served time in the Tower for his support of Charles I. Sir Robert Gayer proved as fervently devoted to the Stuart dynasty as his father had been. He had been made a Knight of the Bath at the Coronation of Charles II (as had John Rolle senior, Lady Christiana's father-in-law), and was dismayed by the Glorious Revolution of 1688-89 which saw James II usurped from the throne by his own son-in-law William of Orange. Though he was almost two dozen years her senior, Lady Christiana married Sir Robert Gayer at some point early in the 1690s. It is from her second marriage that we have the only surviving anecdotal story involving Lady Christiana:
"Gayer is said to have been a humourist, sometimes very captious, and much afflicted with the gout. He was greatly attached to the House of Stuart, and the exiled branch of that family; and it is related, that Stoke House having been then lately rebuilt with some splendour, was become an object of much curiosity and attraction; and amongst others, King William III went thither to see it: but his Majesty's arrival threw the old Knight into a violent passion, and he vehemently swore that he would never permit the King to come under his roof. 'He has got possession of another man's house already--he is a usurper; tell him to go back again.' In vain Lady Gayer [Christiana] interposed; but not prevailing, she fell down upon her knees, and entreated Sir Robert to let the King (who was all this time waiting in his coach at the door) see the house. But he only raved more furiously, and declared an Englishman's house is his castle, and that he would never permit the King to come within those walls. So his Majesty went back again, and never saw Stoke Poges" [George Lipscomb, History and Antiquities of the County of Buckingham, 1847].

With Sir Robert Gayer, Lady Christiana bore two sons, James and Edward. Naming their elder boy in honour of the exiled Stuart monarch lends support to there being some truth behind the tale of Gayer's defiance of William III. When he made his will in 1699, Sir Robert bequeathed £5,000 to each of his two young sons with Lady Christina. He died two years later and was buried in the Gayer family vault in London, next to his first wife. Lady Christina survived him twelve years, taking a townhouse in South Kensington. She died in 1720 at age 62, and was buried in Devon next to her first husband. Edward Gayer, the younger of her sons from her second marriage, is thought to have died without issue. James Gayer, no doubt with the assistance of his wealthy Rolle half-brothers, made his home in the West Country, at Rockbeare House near Exeter, Devon, and died in 1764, leaving a son Dr.  James Gayer (1717-1776), rector of Marham Church, Cornwall 1750-76, who died unmarried, and a daughter Christiana Susanna Gayer (1713-1781) wife of Stuckley Lucas of Southampton, at whose death the line of Sir Robert and Lady Christiana Gayer became extinct.

[*1] In his 1887 Gayer of Trenbrace pedigree, genealogist John Lambrick Vivian assigned Lady Christiana and Sir Robert Gayer a daughter Mary, wife of Hon. Roger North. Mary Gayer married North in 1796 at age 30, and was in reality the eldest surviving child of Sir Robert Gayer, by his first wife Mary Rich.

For those who enjoy mtDNA as much as I do, it's interesting that Lady Christina (Bruce) (Rolle) Gayer is a 7th-generation mtDNA descendant of Margaret Pole, Countess of Salisbury.  In fact, Lady Christina's daughter Diana, Lady Wrey can be traced back 14 generations in her mtDNA line to Maria de Padilla (1334-1361), wife of Pedro I, King of Castile. Following is Annette (née Palk) Baird's 20-generation descent from Edward III thru George, Duke of Clarence and Lady Christiana (née Bruce) Rolle.

Edward III had a 2nd surv son:
