Cheers, ------Brad
Many thanks to Leo van de Pas for pointing out how my Huddleston of Sawston line (Line B above) differs at Generations B10 & B11 from the pedigree of the family in Burke's Landed Gentry, most recently the Eyre-Huddleston of Sawston and Lindley pedigree from the 1952 edition.
ReplyDeleteThe article on Sawston in VCH Cambridge Vol. 6 (1978) states, "Henry Huddleston died in 1657 and his eldest son Sir Robert, who had kept the game for Charles I at Newmarket, in the same year without surviving issue. Robert's brother and heir Henry, who had fought for the king and compounded, was succeeded in 1665 by his son Henry (d. 1713), whose son Richard (d. 1717) borrowed money abroad and improved the family's financial position." In a footnote it cites BLG as a source for Col. Henry Huddleston (d. 1665), and says, "Burke, Land. Gent. (1855), 587, which however dates Hen.'s death incorrectly" and "cf. Burke, Land. Gent. (1855), 587, and B.L. Add. MS. 5798B, p. 331, both of which give an incorrect descent for the later 17th cent.":

There is a detailed article on the Havers family by their descendant, the genealogist Anthony R.J.S. Adolph, titled 'The Catholic Havers of Thelveton Hall, Norfolk' in Catholic Ancestor the Journal of the Catholic Family History Society, Volume 7 No. 4 (February 1999) - many thanks to John Higgins for providing me a copy of it - , where Col. Huddleston's wife is identified as a daughter of William Havers of Thelveton Hall (will proved 11 February 1670) & Susannah Brooke (d. 1675).
"William and Susanna's daughters were Susannah Havers who married Thomas Risden of Writtle...and Elizabeth Havers who married Henry Huddlestone of Sawston Hall in Cambridgeshire. He was a staunch Catholic, a Royalist Lieutenant Colonel, the son of a Gunpowder Plotter and the great-grandson (through his mother) of Anthony Browne, 1st Viscount Montague, one of the most prominent Catholics of the reign of Queen Mary. Their children included William Huddlestone OSB (who apostatized), Sister Mary Gabriel of St Joseph of the Blue Nuns in Paris and the heir Henry Huddlestone who appears later in connection with his Havers cousins". It cites the Eyre-Huddleston of Sawston and Lindley pedigree from the 1952 BLG as it's only source in a footnote, but as it definitely refers to the first name of the Huddleston's Havers wife as 'Elizabeth', not 'Mary' as in BLG, I'm assuming 'Elizabeth' is correct and comes from the various Havers wills and pedigrees that Adolph used throughout.
