{33} Edward III Descents for Michael Henry Blount of Mapledurham House (1789-1874)

Michael Henry Blount (1789-1874)
heraldic achievement
Continuing with the ancestry of Agnes Mary Eyston, second wife of Maj. Charles M.T. Western, it is time to examine some Edward III lines behind her maternal grandfather Michael Henry Blount of Mapledurham House, Oxfordshire, who, in turn, was the son of Michael Blount and his second wife, Catherine, the only surviving child of John Petre of Bellhouse, in the parish of Stanford Rivers, Essex. For over a hundred and fifty years, since 1628, Bellhouse had been the seat of a younger branch of the Catholic baronial family, descended from the 2nd Baron Petre. "In the 17th century and the first half of the 18th Roman Catholic worship was carried on by the Petres at Bellhouse. This was one of the places served by the secret Jesuit mission in eastern England which was founded about 1633 and largely financed by the Petres. The first William Petre of Bellhouse was a servant of Charles I and in 1639 the king personally intervented to prevent him from being prosecuted for recusancy. There was probably a private chapel at Bellhouse, and Roman Catholic worship continued there until after the death of William Petre in 1745. The date when it finally ceased is not certain, but it is unlikely to have continued for long after the death of John Petre in 1762" [VCH Essex 4 (1956)].

John Petre left a will providing "that if he had no sons his estates should pass to Robert, Baron Petre (d. 1801), in trust for Lord Petre's second son, if one should be born to him. Provision was made for any daughters left." At his 1762 death, John's only child, the two-year-old Catherine, became entitled  to a jointure of £4,000 from his estate, while the manor and chief seat of Bellhouse passed to Lord Petre, as per John's will. John's widow oversaw her daughter Catherine's first marriage, at the age of seventeen, to the 26-year-old scion of an established Catholic family of London goldsmiths and bankers, Francis Wright of Bedford Square. Wright died eight years after the marriage, leaving Catherine a wealthy, childless (their only son died twelve days after his birth) widow in her mid-20s. A year later, she married another Catholic gentleman, Michael Blount, twenty-three years her senior, whose first wife had died a mere five months after the birth of their only child, a daughter who was now five years old. Blount and Catherine would have four children together: two daughters, a younger son, and a son and heir.

This concludes my series of posts exploring the ancestry of Col. Charles Maximilian Thomas Western (1855-1913) and his two wives.

Over the next couple weeks, I'll be focusing on entering into my database the German noble families who married the Howard of Corby Castle ladies, and their descendants. I have one family (von Recum) completed, with two more remaining. There are, to my surprise, some Edward III lines among them, so look for posts on those soon.

Cheers,                         -------Brad
