{18} Ruvigny Addition: Exeter Descents for George Villiers (1891-1942)

Continuing with the Howards of Corby Castle, Sir Francis Howard (1848-1930), the younger son of diplomat Sir Henry Francis Howard of Munich and his second wife Marie Ernestine von Schulenburg, was born in Berlin, and made his career in the British Army, rising to the rank of Major-General. He made his home at Castle Godwyn, in Painswick, Gloucestershire, where he died at age 81. He married 23 April 1895, Gertrude Jane Boyd, born 27 February 1871 in New York, died 6 October 1953 at South Kensington, London. Gertrude, Lady Howard, does not have any lines back to Edward I, but nevertheless has an interesting ancestry. Her father, Hugh Conyngham Boyd of Woodside, in Torquay, Devon, was born 1826 in Newry, co. Down, Ireland, and died 18 May 1903 at Woodside. He spent many years in the United States, where he met his American wife, Mary Emmes James, born 1842 in New York, died after 1911 in Devon. They married in 1867 on a visit back to his hometown of Newry. Hugh's parents were Hugh Boyd of Ashgrove Cottage (1788-1848) and Jane Carlile (1797-1866), both of Newry families. Gertrude's mother Mary Emmes James, was the daughter of Nathaniel Emmes James of Brooklyn (1808-1866), married 6 January 1841 at Berlin, Hartford County, Connecticut, Mary Judd Eddy. Both the James and Eddy families can be traced further back to 1600s colonial New England.

Marjorie Howard, the only surviving child of Sir Francis Howard and Gertrude Jane Boyd, was born in 1903, and though she received a liberal education at home, did not attend university. She had strong literary tastes, and a talent for writing, and though she married  in 1931 at the relatively late age of 28, her husband George (John Theodore Hyde) 'Jack' Villiers, was a poet and writer and so a perfect match. Sadly, their only child, Michael George Villiers, lived just fifteen days in 1937.  Writing helped the couple to overcome their grief. Jack Villiers's biography of his grandfather, A Vanished Victorian: Being the Life of George Villiers, 4th Earl of Clarendon 1800-1870, was published in 1938, and dedicated to his wife, whose own book The Grand Whiggery, a look at the highest levels of society in the Whig world from the Duke of Devonshire's marriage to Lady Georgiana Spencer, down to Lady Caroline Lamb, was published the following year in 1939.

After George's untimely death in 1942 at age 50, Marjorie joined a colleague at the Foreign Office, Manya Harari, in founding Harvill Press early in 1946. Working out of a small space in Lower Belgrave Street in London, Manya's skill as a translator and Marjorie's as an editor made them a formidable combination, and they swiftly built up a distinguished list of religious-themed works. The 1950s saw them branch out, publishing English translations of works by authors from behind the Iron Curtain, most notably Boris Pasternak's Doctor Zhivago in 1959, and Giuseppe Tomasi's The Leopard the following year. 1960 was also the year Harvill had its first bestseller, naturalist Joy Adamson's autobiographical Born Free, which Marjorie had championed and edited. She survived her husband forty years, and died in 1982 at the age of 79, greatly respected within the British Catholic and publishing communities.

Louisa Maria (née Maquay) Villiers
(1862-1933)

George Villiers is No. 26878 (p. 380) in Ruvigny's 1907 Exeter volume. I was hoping that entering his ancestry into my database would finally lead me to cross the 40,000 mark, but I came short, stopping at 39,818 - still quite a lot of individuals for a database. Like his wife Marjorie, George Villiers also had an American-born maternal grandmother. George's mother was Louisa Maria Maquay, born 1862 in Florence, Italy, the daughter of George Disney Maquay (1835-1893) of the Irish banking dynasty in Florence, who married 9 August 1860 at the English Episcopal Church in Paris, France, Anna Maria 'Nina' Cooley (born 1839 in New York). Anna Maria was the daughter of James Ewing Cooley (1802-1882), a New York State Senator 1852-53, book dealer and minor poet who wrote a witty and satiric account of his trip to Egypt, The American in Egypt, published in 1842. It is through his father, that George Villiers has two lines of descent from Anne, Duchess of Exeter, sister of Edward IV and Richard III. Line A below is the one Ruvigny included in 1907. Line B is an addition to Ruvigny.

[*2] For those who enjoy mtDNA (female-to-female line) as much as I do, Catherine (née Bishopp), Countess of Liverpool, is a third-generation mtDNA descendant of Arabella Churchill (1649-1730), the mistress of James II of England. The mtDNA line of Col. Hon. George Patrick Hyde Villiers (A19 above), can be traced back ten generations, to Dame Audrey (née Saunders) Villiers, who died in 1587.

As most of the remaining Edward III lines for George Villiers, husband of Marjorie Howard, are well-covered in peerage works and other online resources, I will only examine the Edward III lines in the Villiers ancestry that aren't to be found in the Genealogics and Roglo databases. {17} Remaining Edward III Descents for Evelyn (née Clay) Williams (1906-1995)

Arthur Joseph Clay (1870-1915)

Evelyn Agnes (née Clay) Williams has 26 lines of descent from Edward III, in addition to the one thru Henry IV given in the previous post. Two of them are through Evelyn’s mother, and the rest through her father. Arthur Joseph Clay, the eldest of four sons, was managing director of Bass, Ratcliff & Gretton, the largest brewery in England, based in Burton on Trent. He was also an enthusiast of the earliest automobiles, and in 1905 took part in the first ever Isle of Man Tourist Trophy race. He inherited Holly Bush Hall in 1910, but sold it, making Grangewood House in Derbyshire his home. When the war came in 1914, Arthur was given a commission in the 6th Reserve North Staffordshire Regiment with the rank of Major, with command of 'A' Company. He was involved with trench excavations, practised at Shobnall. He did not serve overseas but he died while on active service, of pneumonia, less than six months later, in February 1915. His 40-year-old widow was left with three young children, ages 8, 5 and 2, and made her home with them at the Well House in Banstead, Surrey. She survived her husband 58 years, and never remarried. In her later years she lived with her elder son at his home in Hascombe, Surrey.

Evelyn Agnes Clay was the firstborn child of Arthur Joseph Clay, a partner at Bass, Ratcliff & Gretton, the (then) largest brewing company in the world, headquartered in Burton-on-Trent, Staffordshire, which output a million barrels a year. Her father was also a Major in the 6th Battalion of the British Army’s North Staffordshire Regiment, and he died at Harpenden, Hertfordshire while on active service on 18 February 1915, six months after the outbreak of the First World War. Evelyn was only 8 years old. At the age of 31, she married, as his second wife, Brigadier Edward 'Ted' Williams (1892-1977), and they had two sons and two daughters. Evelyn Williams survived her husband eighteen years, dying in 1995 at the age of 88.

The Clay family originated in Burton-on-Trent, and made their fortune when that town became one of Britain’s leading brewing centers in the 18th-century. By the 19th-century, the family expanded into banking. Evelyn’s paternal grandfather, Charles John Clay, a younger son, became a barrister at the Inner Temple, a banker, and a partner at the Bass, Ratcliff & Gretton brewing company. He inherited a family property not far from Burton-upon-Trent, over the border in Derbyshire, called Stapenhill House, where all four of his sons were born. He later bought Holly Bush Hall, in Newborough, Staffordshire, which he made his chief residence, and where he died. Charles John Clay and his family can be found in the Clay of Piercefield article in Burke’s Landed Gentry 18th Edition Vol. 1 (1965). A website created by Charles John's descendant Robin Clay also has detailed information and wonderful photos.

Rather unusually for a lady of the upper class in early 20th-century England, none of Elizabeth’s four grandparents – Edward Charles Healey, Elizabeth Wheatley, William Killigrew Wait, Elizabeth Perrin – despite their rather posh-sounding names - appear to have any lines of descent from Edward I. So much for the claim of respected Victorian-era genealogist John Horace Round that if he were given an English person with at least four English/British grandparents he could prove their descent from a British royal.

Evelyn (née Clay) Williams descends from Edward III through each of her parents, and it is through her father that she has the line of descent from Henry IV. Like Mary Jones (1644-1683), first wife of Lt-Gov. Thomas Lloyd of Pennsylvania, Evelyn Williams’s 18-generation line of descent from Henry IV is through the Worcestershire Littleton family.

[*4] Rev. Thomas Arden can be found in the ‘Arden formerly of Longcroft’ article in BLG 18th edition Vol. 2 (1969). The article provides little detail and no dates for Rev. Thomas. He was born 17 March 1796 at Longcroft Hall, Yoxall, Staffordshire, died 8 October at Walton-on-Trent, Derbyshire, buried 12 October 1860 at St John the Baptist Church, Walton-on-Trent. He married 9 April 1834 at St James Church, Longdon, Staffordshire, Isabella Mary Cooper (born 29 November 1795 at Harpsden, Oxfordshire; died 31 January 1859 at Walton-on-Trent). In addition to the two sons mentioned in the article, Rev. Thomas and Isabella Mary Arden also had two daughters: Agnes Lucy Arden, born 19 August 1838 at Longcroft Hall, christened 9 May 1839 at St Peter Church, Yoxall (see Generation 16 above), and her elder sister Margaret Isabella Arden, born 25 January at Longcroft Hall, christened 9 March 1836 at St Peter Church, Yoxall; died unmarried 11 May 1878 at Stapenhill House, buried St Peter Church, Stapenhill.

{14} James V Descent for Brigadier Edward 'Ted' Williams (1892-1977)

Continuing on with the ancestry of the spouses of the Howards of Corby Castle in the Norfolk article of Burke’s Peerage 107th Edition (2003), we come to Edward Bruce Williams (b. 12 June 1946), husband of Catherine Mary Howard[*1], great-granddaughter of Sir Henry Howard (1843-1921) and Cecilia Dowdall Riggs (1844-1907), his American-born wife, whose 18-generation line of descent from Edward III was covered in my post to SocGenMed on March 6th.

Edward’s father, Edward ‘Ted’ Stephen Bruce Williams, was a distinguished British Army officer who served in both World Wars, and rose to the rank of Honorary Brigadier. He was also a first-class cricketer. He was born 2 November 1892 at Pinhoe, Devon, and died 20 January 1977 at Winchester, Hampshire. He has a Wikipedia entry.

Brigadier Ted Williams has a 14-generation illegitimate line of descent from James V of Scotland, through that monarch’s son the Earl of Moray, Regent of Scotland.

[*2] The most thorough account of the Bruces of Arnot Tower, in Kinross-shire, are the notes made by this Thomas Bruce between 1860 and 1869, and included in the memoir of his son Sir Charles Bruce, Milestones on My Long Journey: Memories of a Colonial Governor (1917). Thomas Bruce’s account of the parentage of his first wife Henrietta Dorin is more thorough than that given in the ODNB bio of her brother Joseph Alexander Dorin (1802-1872).

[*3] Sir Edward Williams has an entry in both Who Was Who: Volume I 1897-1915, 7th Edition (2014), p. 683, and Who Was Who in British India. Sir Edward was the son of a Royal Navy surgeon, John Williams of Southsea, Hampshire (born about 1786, died 8 November 1856 at Southsea), and his first wife, whom I cannot further identify. Sir Edward was born at the Royal Navy base at Devonport, Plymouth, but the registers are not yet available online. Dr. Williams’s second wife, married 27 January 1846 at Sherborne, Dorset, was Emily Elizabeth Ashford, and per their marriage certificate, Dr. Williams’s father was “William Williams, yeoman”.

[*4] I was excited to finally come across a Canadian in my research. Though Mabel Heward does not appear to have any descents from Edward I, her ancestry does take her back to a family in Burke’s Peerage. Her paternal grandmother, Mary Robinson, was the elder sister of Sir John Robinson, 1st Baronet of Toronto, and their ancestry can be traced in the article for that title in the 2003 BP. Her paternal grandfather, Major Stephen Heward of the Grenadier Guards, was a United Empire Loyalist who settled in Toronto and served as Auditor-General of Upper Canada. Their son (Mabel’s father), Stephen Heward Junior (1826-1881), a Toronto stockbroker, married Catherine Crookshank (1829-1917), daughter of George Crookshank (1773-1859), who has an entry in the Dictionary of Canadian Biography.

Henry Mowbray Howard of Kensington (1873-1953) was the younger son of Cecilia Dowdall Riggs and Sir Henry Howard above. He married Norah Florence Annie Watson (born 28 March 1885 at Madras, India; died 1974 in Surrey, England). Her father was a Scottish officer stationed in India: Major John Dunlop Watson, born 20 October 1858 at Auchterless, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, and died 28 February 1946 at Banchory, Kincardineshire, Scotland. He married 15 March 1884 at Coonoor, Madras, India, Margaret Aspinwall (born 1863), daughter of John Hutchinson Aspinwall (23 October 1834-11 September 1884), an Englishman who owned a successful mercantile business in Fort Cochin (now Kochi) in Madras, and was one of the leading town officials in the 1870s. There doesn't appear to be any Edward I lines behind either of Norah Watson's parents, so I haven't traced her ancestry further back.

Capt. Henry Edmund Howard of Wickham (1923-1999), the only son of Henry Mowbray Howard and Norah Watson above, married in Glasgow in 1945, Sheila Brown (born 15 July 1923; died 14 August 2007). Her father was Colin McNab Heys Brown, but other than the fact that he served in the British Army in World War I, I can find no further information on him: no birthdate, death date, nor the identity of his spouse.

Katherine Rowe, the wife of Maj. (Henry) Colin Francis Howard, only son of Henry Edmund Howard and Sheila Brown, is the daughter of Kenneth Charles Harold Rowe (1913-2006), who was Chairman of Rowe Brothers & Co, and the Mayor of Exeter, Devon 1962-1963, and his wife Roma Dampier Freeman (1917-2010). Again, no immediate Edward I lines are apparent, so I haven't traced her ancestry further back.

The next Howard spouse however - Edward Bruce Williams, the husband of Catherine Jane Howard, only daughter of Henry Edmund Howard and Sheila Brown - does have traceable lines going back to the Stewart kings of Scotland, and to a first cousin of novelist Jane Austen, among others. I'll explore his ancestry in the next few posts.

{12} Bringing the Blog Back to Life

One of my goals this year was to start back up my Royal Descent Blog. Since last fall, my genealogy research has been focused on entering the Howard Dukes of Norfolk into my database. As I go along, I've been researching the ancestry of the spouses of all of the Howards that are given in the Norfolk article in the 107th Edition (2003) of Burke's Peerage. I've been sharing these lines with the newsgroup SocGenMedieval, but that is not really the proper forum, as most of the research concerns individuals born after the 16th-century.

Originally, I had hoped my Royal Descent Blog would be more biographical in nature, and so I put it aside five years ago to focus on building up my database. I realize now that the biography posts on the Plantagenet monarchs and their families need not be the only type of writing I do on my blog, and that it's perfectly okay to make posts that are purely genealogy-oriented.

So, I'm very excited to continue my series of posts on the ancestry of the Howard spouses, and revive my Royal Descent Blog at the same time. Five years is far too long to let it lay dormant!
